Hair Straightening FAQ
What chemical process is used for hair straightening?
Relaxer and Keratin Smoothing Treatment are the two chemical processes for hair straightening.
A relaxer is a permanent (some call it a perm) straightening service for coarse hair.
A keratin smoothing treatment is best for curly, frizzy, and damaged hair. It is not permanent and lasts up to 3 months.
**Hair that is virgin and never had these services in the past can choose either straightening option.
How to get lasting results from my relaxer or keratin service?
For relaxers, moisturize hair with deep conditioning treatments, avoid excessive heat, and stretch touch-ups every 8-12 weeks to prevent overprocessing.
For keratin treatments, use sulfate-free shampoos and limit washing to 2-3 times weekly. Avoid salt-based or clarifying shampoos that strip the keratin from the hair.
Wear a swim cap to prevent chlorine interference and dryness in both cases.
Is there risks or side effects associated with chemical hair straigters?
Some keratin treatments contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing ingredients, which can pose health risks if inhaled in large amounts. We offer formaldehyde-free options that still smooth the hair but may not last as long.
Relaxers can cause damage if not applied and maintained correctly. Over-processing, frequent touch-ups, and improper aftercare can lead to dryness, breakage, and scalp irritation.
Relaxed hair can remain healthy with proper care, such as regular deep conditioning, protein treatments, and minimal heat styling.
Visiting a professional stylist for application and touch-ups is essential to prevent overprocessing and breakage.
What is the difference between a hair relaxer and a keratin treatment?
A hair relaxer is a permanent chemical process that breaks down the natural bonds in curly or kinky hair to make it straight. It typically uses sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, or guanidine hydroxide.
A keratin treatment, on the other hand, is a semi-permanent smoothing process that infuses keratin protein into the hair to reduce frizz and loosen curl patterns.
Unlike relaxers, keratin treatments gradually fade over time rather than permanently altering the hair structure.
Can I color my hair after getting a relaxer or keratin treatment?
You can have your hair colored with a rinse color after a Relaxer service, but it’s best to wait at least two weeks for a permanent color. Since coloring the hair darker is more gentle for relaxed hair than going lighter, lightening the hair more than two levels is prohibited.
Getting any color service before a Keratin treatment on the same day is okay. However, the keratin treatment is best after a color service to seal in the color and enhance the shine.
